He has lived in and around Santa Fe since 1971 and retired in 2014 from a career of starting and running small businesses. He started in the seventies as an electrical contractor (Pecos Valley Electric and its companion service company, Electric Aid); then moved a rung up the technology ladder and co-founded a telephone interconnect company (Southwest Telephone Systems), and finally co-founded a software company (Oaisys) specializing in the integration of computer and phone system.

Previously he worked in video production and computer consulting. Joel has been volunteering with LCWA for over ten years and has participated in many member installs. Joel graduated from Cornell College of Mt Vernon, Iowa, has lived in Santa Fe since 2000 and is originally from Wisconsin.
